Centenary named state's only Tier One National Liberal Arts College

Centenary College of Louisiana

SHREVEPORT, LA — Centenary College was named Louisiana's only Tier One National Liberal Arts College in the 2016 U.S. News & World Report ranking released today. The colleges recognized in the U.S. News ranking emphasize undergraduate education and award at least half of their degrees in the arts and sciences. This is the fifth year in a row that Centenary has been ranked nationally in Tier One.

"The Tier One recognition is an affirmation of the work we do at Centenary every day," said Centenary president David Rowe. "Our students are empowered to do more for themselves, for others, and for the world thanks to the high expectations and commitment of our dedicated faculty and unique experiences like our Centenary in Paris program for incoming first years. We are proud to be ranked so highly alongside other national liberal arts colleges in the Associated Colleges of the South such as Hendrix, Rhodes, and Sewanee."

Each year, U.S. News & World Report publishes the national rankings to provide reliable and consistent data to help prospective students and their families in their college search.

"Centenary provides a world-class education that drew me in from the first time I sat in on a class," said senior Tierra Range of Shreveport. "I visited many schools but never saw teacher-student relationships as close as those at Centenary and it truly made me excited to be a part of such a healthy learning environment. I feel prepared to take what I've learned from Centenary and use it to excel in my continuing graduate-level education."

The U.S. News ranking follows other national honors Centenary has received this summer:

  • Forbes included Centenary in its lists of "Best Private Colleges" and "Best Colleges in the South" in its annual ranking of "America's Top Colleges" released in July. Centenary also received an "A" grade for financial health from Forbes, the only "A" awarded in the state of Louisiana.
  • In August, The Princeton Review named Centenary one of "The Best 380 Colleges" in the nation.
